Caplan identified the seven characteristics of coping behaviour as:

 
bulletactive search for information
bulletfree expression of both positive and negative feelings
bulletasking for help from other people
bulletbreaking problems down into manageable bits and working through them one at a time
bulletfatigue countered in pacing of one's efforts
bulletactive mastery of feelings where possible but acceptance of lack of control when it occurs
bullettrust in oneself and optimism about outcome
