Guidelines for Negotiation

Lesotho Ministry of Education & Australian International Development Assistance Bureau (1989) Education Programme for Southern Africa - In-country Workshop in Education Administration.

The following guidelines should assist educational administrators in their negotiations with others:

bulletConsult with any people who will be affected by any decisions before the decisions are implemented.
bulletTake a positive approach by expecting to reach a settlement which is satisfactory to everyone concerned.
bulletKeep an open mind remembering that other negotiators may have information which you don't have - this could be significant in affecting decisions which you make.
bulletListen to what others have to say - even if you don't agree, it may be useful for you to know or use later.
bulletDon't throw your weight around - it leads to a lack of cooperation.

bulletKeep your temper, be calm, because you can't think effectively when emotions are running high.
bulletDon't be distracted by irrelevant issues.
bulletAddress relevant issues honestly and openly.
bulletExpect others to confront issues honestly and openly.
bulletEstablish your own set of clearly defined procedures for solving problems and reaching acceptable decisions.
