If we are to understand the stress situation of a man falling out of a boat, the main determinant of how much stress he experiences will be whether or not he can swim. (Mechanic, 1967 )

Those who deal with stress best are those who have coping strategies. There are two broad types of strategy :

 
bulletchange the situation which is stressful by:
bulletaltering the situation itself, or
bulletaltering your perception of it
bulletdeal with the thoughts, feelings and bodily reactions to stress rather than attempt to change the situation itself or your perception of it
